With summer fast approaching, hair risks lots of damage from sun, salt and chlorine. Stop the hair-damage downward spiral with these three tips to prevent hair breakage this summer. (Adapted from an article that was originally published on Into the Gloss.)
We’ve all been there: it’s mid-summer and we’ve been living our best summer lives, non-stop. We’ve been running in the sun, swimming in a chlorinated pool, and maybe even taking a dip in the ocean. All those UV rays, chlorine, salt and — yes — sweat, can cause hair breakage.
First, a little background… breakage happens when your hair is so brittle that it snaps off. On top of the damaging elements facing your hair during the summer, if you color and heat style your hair regularly, your risk for breakage and damage goes up even more. But fear not — read on for three easy steps you can take to repair that hair damage, and keep your hair looking healthy all summer long.
How to Avoid Summer Hair Damage
1. Eat More Protein, Vitamins & Nutrients
“Avocado toast with an egg is the key to life,” bellows Into the Gloss senior editor Emily Ferber daily. She’s right — if you swap “life” with “healthy hair.” Protein-rich foods like eggs and marine proteins (fish, shellfish) promote thick, full hair growth. Good fats like omega-3s are also essential, as are B vitamins like Biotin and Niacin, as well as Iron and Zinc. Or you can take Viviscal hair growth supplement. Models and celebs like Caroline Trentini, Karlie Kloss and Reese Witherspoon have sung our praises in the press (just saying). A good diet or a complete supplement is the key to beautiful hair growth because you’ve got to nourish that healthy hair from within.
2. Switch to Silk
Friction between your hair and your cotton pillowcase is a real thing, but sleeping on silk helps prevents that damaging friction. Silk pillowcases can even help prevent skin damage. Replace your regular pillowcase with the Slip silk pillowcase or wear a silk hair cap at night. For a glam nighttime fashion statement, try this jewel-toned sleeping cap.
3. Do Hot Oil Treatments
A hot oil treatment helps moisturize the hair and scalp, protecting it from serious summer damage. First, choose your favorite oil (here at Viviscal, we recommend avocado, neem, rosehip, or coconut oil). Heat the oil on the stove until it’s warm, but not hot. Test a little of the warm oil on the back of your hand first, to be sure it’s not too hot. When the oil is ready, lean over your bathtub and pour it into your scalp. Then massage the oil into your scalp and spread it from root to tip. Separate out any excess oil and then tuck your hair into a towel or shower cap. Leave it on for at least one hour and then use a gentle shampoo to wash it out. The general rule of thumb is to do this once a week, but you can repeat it as often as you think your hair needs it.
Throwback Bonus Hair Tip: Swap Elastic Hair Ties For Scrunchies
Lean in to the ’80s and ’90s nostalgia AND help protect your hair from damage. Elastic ponytail holders can pull too tightly on hair, causing damage. Reach for a retro scrunchy instead to make a statement and protect your hair.
