Want to help your hair grow faster? The reality is that nothing (except hair extensions) will cause your hair to get noticeably longer overnight. That doesn’t mean that faster hair growth is impossible.
The difference between normal hair growth and fast hair growth often comes down to minor lifestyle tweaks. Here are the four that we’ve found to be the most effective.
1. Start Practicing Healthier Habits
If you want those locks to grow, you need to feed your follicles from the inside out. Your diet has a big impact on how your hair grows and how it responds to other hair growth products. Here are the most important vitamins and nutrients for hair growth:
- Protein – supports keratin production (the substance that makes up 90% of your hair)
- Zinc – regulates the androgen hormones that can slow hair growth
- Iron – helps red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body
- Niacin (B3) – prevents hair shedding, dullness and brittleness
Remember to always stay hydrated so your hair follicles don’t get dry. If you have difficult sticking to a consistent diet, look into a hair growth supplement. It’s easy, and you can get all the vitamins and nutrients you need in one pop.
2. Ditch the Cotton
Cotton is one of the silent killers of hair growth. It’s in almost all of our clothing, sheets and towels, and it wreaks havoc on our hair almost every single day.
The coarse texture of cotton roughens up hair strands, which causes split ends and small craters along the hair shaft. The result is weakened hair that looks dry, frizzy and in need of moisture.
As fun as it is to wrap your hair in your bath towel after washing, try blotting it dry instead. It’s much gentler to your follicles and can dry your hair almost as fast. If you can’t stand the idea of not wrapping your towel around your head, invest in microfiber towels which reduce the friction. Also think about swapping out your cotton pillowcase for silk or satin to reduce the friction from the natural movements of sleep.
3. Get the Right Conditioner
You already know that you should be washing less and conditioning more, but it’s important to know what type of conditioner is best suited for your hair.
- If your hair is fine or flat with no frizziness, use a volumizing conditioner to add texture. It’s lighter than a regular formula and doesn’t add extra weight to hair.
- If you have wavy hair that’s prone to frizzing in humidity and going limp in dry weather, use a lightweight moisturizing conditioner. Find a product marketed specifically to wavy hair, rather than curly hair.
- Thick, curly hair should be treated with a deep-hydrating conditioner. The curlier the hair, the dryer it gets.
- Intense curl in African American hair should be protected by deep-hydrating conditioner designed to boost moisture with various types of oil.
Feel free to experiment with different products, but when you find one that you like, stick with it. Take special care in choosing your conditioner if your hair is color-treated, or if your hair is exposed to excessive amounts of chlorine or direct sunlight.
4. Invest in Essential Oils
Essential oils are a serious game-changer for healthy hair. They stimulate blood flow and invigorate hair follicles to help them get nutrients more efficiently — exactly what you need if you want your hair to grow faster.
You can experiment with different recipes of oils to find the formula you like, but the easiest way to create an effective mixture is to choose a base and two or three supplemental oils. For a base, we recommend coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil. There are plenty of supplemental oils to choose from, but our favorites are castor oil, horsetail plant oil, peppermint and jojoba.
Mix a few drops of your supplemental oil with 1-2 teaspoons of your base. Massage the mixture into your head for about 10 minutes, and wash normally. Your scalp will feel clean and refreshed, and blood circulation will improve almost immediately.
It Takes Patience
Don’t get frustrated when you don’t see hair growth results after a week, or even a month. Everyone’s hair grows differently, but keeping track of everything you put inside your body as well as the products you use for your hair can help. Educate yourself and remain as consistent with your routine as you can.
