Yes, Valentine’s Day is coming up very soon. But whether you have big V-day plans or not, you can get some major pretty-hair inspiration from the red carpet. Here are 8 of the prettiest long-hair hairstyles to make you look and feel your best for your next big romantic night out — or a night in!
Sleek and Stick-Straight
Jennifer Lopez’s hairstylist Chris Appleton opted for stick-straight, down-to-there hair when J. Lo hit the red carpet at the Latin Grammys. Keep sleek and straight strands super-shiny to maintain a luxe look that isn’t drab or overwhelming. To keep up the shine, try a glossing shine mist and finish with a dry oil spray, which can be applied to wet or dry strands.
Long, Chunky Fishtail
If you have a lot of long hair, a chunky and unfussy fishtail manages to be both lush and composed. The secret to a perfect fishtail braid is to keep it loose. After completing the braid, finish off the look by tugging on either side of the braid with your thumb and forefinger.
This low updo looks elaborate, but is actually super-simple to do. This look is actually just center-parted hair with two small French braids on either side. Then, gather them into a low cluster at the nape of the neck and pin them any which way. You can choose to make this look exact, like on Olivia Culpo above, but the side braid style also looks good when it’s slightly messy and disheveled.
If you want to elevate the super-simple ponytail but want to keep the look more romantic than gym-going, try Emma Stone’s tiny peek-a-boo braids. Stone’s hairstylist Mara Roszak added the two braids and then gathered her hair into a loose pony just above the nape. Tip: this style works even better if the layers in front are shorter than in the back. That allows you to pin the shorter braids at the base of your ponytail instead of having to use another elastic.
A topknot is easy but it can definitely be romantic too. Especially if your hair is thick, you can get away with pulling it up, and it will look fantastic in this topknot. Insider trick: if your hair is long but fine, use a mesh donut form to add volume and heft inside the topknot.
If you have zero time to get ready, or your plans came together just at the last minute, this style is super-easy and effortless. The secret? Brush your hair, then tip upside down and flip your hair over, directing it to the opposite side it actually falls.
A wide black headband or even a satin ribbon, lends structure and poise to a bouncy blowout. For extra oomph, pair the look with a little volume up top and a smoky cat eye.
Long, Loose Waves
This look is curls — elevated. Curl your hair and then break up the coils with your fingertips. These tumbling tendrils should never be too tight or coiled or fussy. Just easy and romantic.
