The best of the hair alphabet by Essence

A is for Andra (Day)

For the Grammy-nominated singer Andra Day — must-see: her duet performance with Ellie Goulding at the February Grammy Awards — there is no such thing as a bad hair day. That’s because she flawlessly pulls off the head scarf look on the Red Carpet, perfectly paired with a fierce cat eye and a red lip.

B is for bristles

Two new must-have hair brushes are all about the bristles. The bristles in Revlon’s new Scalp Sensations paddle brush has ball tips that are three times larger than ordinary brushes, to give a soothing scalp massage with each use. Tangle Teezer released a new blow-dry brush with teeth that can handle high heat.

D is for degrees

“Never use excessive temperature with hot tools,” says Tim Moore, GHD‘s Chief Technology Officer. “Four hundred degrees and up can cause damage. The best temp is 365°F.” In fact, above 410°F, high heat tools can actually break down the keratin in the hair strand, leaving irreparable damage for which the only remedy is a haircut and growing hair out.

J is for Johnny (Wright)

This November, there will be a momentous change in the White House. And we don’t just mean the Commander-in-Chief. The FLOTUS, Michelle Obama, has given us on-point hairstyles – with bangs, curls, updos and highlights — for nearly 8 years, all with the help of hairstylist guru Johnny Wright. It’s the end of an era.

L is for lock love

Tell YOUR hairstory. Pick up the new quarterly CRWN Magazine celebrating all things African American hair – whether it’s natural, curly, kinky or relaxed – on newsstands now.

R is for Riri

Rihanna never fails to disappoint with her refreshing style choices and especially her hairstyles. Over the years, whether it’s bright Raggedy Ann-red hair, or waist-length locks, or an adorable pixie cut, she never feels pressured to stick to the trends and that’s why her looks are never boring. Look out for Ms. Riri at the next big Red Carpet event. You will not be disappointed.

S is for scalp aid

Hair loss expert and trichologist, Philip Kingsley, advises, “Treat your scalp with the same care you treat your face, which includes an exfoliating scalp mask once a week.”

V is for vitamins

If your locks are in limbo or are growing out, you may be missing key hair nutrients. Help reach your hair goals with a daily hair supplement for women that is rich in Biotin, Iron, Zinc, Vitamin C, Niacin and a marine complex. Viviscal Extra Strength is 100% drug free, clinically proven in 25 years of research, and is suitable for all hair types.
