Ninety days to longer, stronger hair: that’s the promise. But when you’ve made the Big Chop, and worse, you now regret ever getting into your hairstylist’s chair, every morning wrestling with your short hair can feel like an eternity. Refinery29 author Taylor Bryant gets to the root (!) of the best fool-proof plan to get longer, stronger hair growth in 90 days.
Get A Plan
First things first, says Bryant. You’ve got to get a game plan — and then commit to it. “Be on a schedule, do the right things, stick with it. Don’t just say, ‘Yeah, [I’m] going to do it’ and then [not] do it,” advises hairstylist Nunzio Saviano. “Put it on a calendar… know when [to] get a trim, if you need to take vitamins, etc.”
Thanks, Nunzio. To that end, Nunzio Saviano and celebrity hairstylist Garren share the best ways to accelerate healthy, strong and – yes – long hair growth.
Worth the Wait
Living in an age of instant gratification, it can be extremely frustrating when your hair grows too slowly. To jump-start the process, both Saviano and Garren recommend reaching for some vitamins.
Stylists’ Choice: The Best Hair Vitamins
Bryant writes, “Biotin and Viviscal are two of the most popular hair-boosting supplements out there. They both help improve the keratin infrastructure (keratin is a basic protein that makes up not only your hair, but also your skin and nails).”
Bonus: Viviscal supplements actually already contain Biotin (a.k.a. vitamin B7). So a daily dose of Viviscal could actually be all you need to grow thicker hair in three months.
Research shows that Viviscal Professional (our line of Viviscal hair supplement that’s sold exclusively from doctors or hair salons) promotes an 80% increase in the number of mature, thick hairs (called “terminal hairs”) on your head compared with the number of baby hairs (called “vellus hairs”). Plus, Viviscal Professional was found to increase the diameter of hair strands by 12%.
The takeaway: after 3-6 months on Viviscal, any thin, wispy hair will noticeably stronger and thicker. Not only will hair look healthier, but it will be able to grow longer because it’s less prone to breakage.
Other Hair Growth Advice from the Pros
Along with hair supplements, you can make other changes to your diet and your daily styling routine to get your hair to healthy.
A Hair Growth Diet
Your diet is also a key part of this hair growth regimen. Eat plenty of marine-based proteins (think salmon and shellfish). And Saviano is a big believer in the benefits of avocados. Plus, you can’t go wrong with adding nuts and dark-green leafy veggies to your diet. This, combined with a regular workout that boosts blood circulation to the scalp, will definitely speed up growth, Bryant assures us.
Go Cold Turkey on Heat Styling
Think back to the last few times you styled your hair: Did it involve a lot of blow-drying, straightening, or curling? That could be your problem.
“Lay off the irons,” says Saviano, “because they can break your hair and make your ends drier,” he says. “Curling irons are, like, 400 degrees, and that’s not to be taken lightly. Even when you do it fast, the ends still stay in the curling iron for, like, one or two seconds.”
If you use hot tools once in a while, Garren advises being selective. “Make sure that you’re using the proper tools that have some kind of coating on them, so that they don’t burn the hair,” he says. “Anything that’s a hot tool with gold or metal is going to be damaging.” And always, always use a heat protectant beforehand to shield your hair from the heat.
