Beat the forces of gravity. Whether you need real, long-term hair thickness or a 5-minute quick volumizer, Harry Josh, celeb hairstylist extraordinaire, spills to InStyle how to add major volume to your hair. You can boost limp, lifeless hair to va-va-voom status.

You Want Lasting Volume – For Real

While hair extensions may give you thicker-looking hair right now, they do your hair health no favors. Not only do they do nothing to help your real hair grow thicker, but they can even cause damage. Meaning that the hair underneath could be more fragile and prone to breakage, leading to less thickness and impeding growth. Instead, for a long-term answer for thick, healthy hair growth, ask your dermatologist about hair growth supplements. Harry Josh recommends taking supplements, saying that it’s important to nourish your hair from the inside out. Take two tablets of Viviscal Hair Growth Supplements every day, and clinical trials show that most women will have thicker hair and less shedding after as little as three months, with full results at six months. The blend of AminoMar, an exclusive marine complex, plus healthy hair nutrients including Biotin, Zinc and Iron feed follicles from the inside to deliver real thickness. Be patient, give it time, and you can have proven results.

You Have 10 Minutes

If you only have 10 minutes to achieve volumized perfect, Josh recommends adding a mousse to the lengths of your hair. This will add natural-looking thickness to locks. “Mousses,” notes Josh, “when you blow-dry it or rough-dry, make your strands huge, so hair looks meatier and allows for more pliability.”

Then, apply a root lifter and blow-dry as normal. Finally, use hot rollers down the center of your head (the “mohawk section”) to give hair a lift at the root. Josh recommends putting the diffuser attachment on your dryer and then giving the rollers some high heat to create volume, then follow with a blast of cold air to set the style. “It’s like a cookie when you take it out of the oven,” Josh explains. “It needs to harden. Hair roots are the same thing.”

You Have 5 Minutes or Less

No time to add steps to your everyday routine? Your regular washing routine is a good place to start. Ideally, Josh recommends a volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Next, dry your roots quickly with styling product. “If you don’t apply a volumizer or dry your roots from wet to dry,” warns Josh, “you’ll never get the lift back in …the only way to manipulate the roots is while hair is wet.”

For this styling product, Josh recommends “any kind of thing that’s going to starch up the hair,” such as a mousse or a root lifter. And although it’s not ideal for hydrating your hair, if you really want the ultimate lifting effect, Josh recommends a product with a high alcohol content. “You want products that contain zero moisture so that they promote stiffness and hardness,” he explains. “That’s what makes hair pliable and what keeps the volume going all day long.” After you apply product, Josh says to blow-dry roots with the nozzle of the dryer pointed up.

Of course, if you want to minimize damage and maximize healthy-looking volume, you should first be conscious of the types of products you’re using on your hair. Reduce the damaging treatments such as bleaching and keratin, and use hair extensions only sparingly, to keep your hair looking healthy and lustrous.
