While you nourish your hair follicles from the inside, it is also important to strengthen and moisturize hair on the outside. This reduces hair damage and prevents breakage – which can slow hair growth – and a good moisturizer will keep hair looking healthy and shiny. So what’s the best way to strengthen and moisturize hair from the outside? A moisturizing hair mask, of course!

Don’t worry – there’s no need to purchase an expensive hair mask from a beauty salon. You can get the same results without leaving the house by making a homemade hair mask. Keep reading for our favorite ways to DIY a moisturizing hair mask!

extreme hair growth mask

Extreme Hair Growth Mask

Word on the internet is that this moisturizing hair mask can help your hair to grow extremely fast. While the jury is still out on the extreme part, there’s no doubt that this mask contains nourishing ingredients that can help prevent breakage. Here’s how to make it at home:

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon ginger paste
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon jojoba oil
1 tablespoon coconut oil (melted)

Instructions:

In a bowl, mix together ginger paste with olive oil, jojoba oil, and coconut oil. Using your fingertips, gently massage the mixture into your scalp for 5 minutes. Leave the extreme hair growth mask on your hair for 30 minutes. Then wash hair with Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Shampoo. For best results, repeat this mask one or two times per week.

If your goal is hair growth, try Viviscal Hair Growth Supplements. Unlike the extreme hair growth mask above, Viviscal is clinically proven to help women suffering from fine or thinning hair achieve thicker, fuller, and healthier hair in 3-6 months*. In clinical studies, women saw a 32% increase in the number of terminal hairs and a nearly 40% decrease in hair shedding/loss in just 3 months+. Not bad!

Avocado Conditioning Hair Mask

Avocado Conditioning Hair Mask

Thanks to its high content of oleic and palmitic acids, avocado helps moisturize and strengthen damaged, brittle hair. These fatty acids help coat hair strands and form a protective layer to reduce moisture loss and soften hair. The natural proteins in avocado also help strengthen the hair shaft and add body and shine to hair. Additionally, avocados contain vitamins A, D, E, and phytosterols, all of which condition and soothe itchy, irritated scalp.

Ingredients:

1 ripe avocado
1 tablespoon avocado oil or olive oil
1 tablespoon honey (optional, for extra conditioning)

Instructions:

Blend all the ingredients into a smooth and creamy paste. Apply this mixture to your scalp and hair, making sure that all areas are covered. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave it on for 1 hour. Rinse with cool water, then wash hair with Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Shampoo.

Honey & Olive Oil Moisturizing Hair Mask

Honey & Olive Oil Moisturizing Hair Mask

This moisturizing mask DIY deeply conditions hair strands with olive oil, honey, and essential oils. Both honey and olive oil act as humectants, meaning that they attract and hold onto water molecules. Honey also has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties to help ease dandruff and scalp irritation. Olive oil is rich in antioxidants, including vitamin E, and it helps improve the hair’s elasticity and softness under dry scalp conditions.

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon honey
2 tablespoon olive oil
3 drops peppermint essential oil (or essential oil of your choice, such as rosemary or lavender)

Instructions:

In a small bowl, stir together all the ingredients until well blended. Apply the mixture to your hair and massage it into your scalp and hair. Put on a shower cap and leave the treatment on for about an hour. Then wash your hair as usual.

Note: honey can have a mild bleaching effect over time that can lighten your hair color. If you do not want to lighten your hair, substitute the honey for dark molasses.

Protective Banana & Avocado Hair Mask

This recipe is ideal for naturally curly hair because the mayonnaise restores moisture and acts as a protein treatment — a must for naturally curly hair. The avocado has vitamin A and antioxidants to protect hair, and the bananas contain biotin for healthy strands.

Ingredients:

1/4 ripe avocado
1/2 banana
2-3 tablespoons olive oil
2-3 tablespoons mayonnaise

Instructions:

Blend all ingredients together on high to create a smooth paste. Apply to damp hair and wrap in a towel. Leave on hair for 15 minutes, then shampoo and condition hair as usual.
