6 Stylist-Approved, Summer-Friendly, Wash-and-Go Hairstyles

1. Wave Runner

Smooth, polished waves are impossible to achieve in humidity. Instead, celeb stylist Paul Norton recommends “undone beach waves“. Norton warns that although these waves are easy, they’re not effortless. Start with a mid-size curling iron and curl “random areas of the hair to create more definition”. Then use a texturizer to create more definition to achieve a slightly messy, undone finish.

2. Pleasant Top Plait

You will look AND feel cool this summer with this combination of a “sleek high ponytail and a messy fishtail braid,” says Norton. Since summer hair always gets disheveled by the end of the day, this slightly tousled braid gives you that look from the start, and only looks better as the day goes on. But, if you’re not loving the way the braid looks by late afternoon, Norton recommends transitioning the braid into an easy “topknot by simply using a few bobby pins to anchor the braid onto the base of the ponytail.”

3. Adorn Me

Some mornings, the only solution for tired summer hair is to throw it into a ponytail or topknot. For those mornings, embrace your accessories. Norton suggests affixing these go-to styles with metal hair accessories or a ribbon, but updating the look by placing them in unexpected ways. The placement “should give you a chance to embrace asymmetry and a more fashion-forward look.”

4. Crop Top

If you’re dying to make a big chop, there’s no better time than in the heat of summer. Short cuts may seem limiting, but celebrity hairstylist Garren points to Scarlett Johanssen’s head-turning “bad girl/boy” hairstyle, which she debuted this spring, as the ultimate in versatility. Garren suggests slicking back your crop like a men’s hairstyle to turn it into a dressy look. Or add a texturizing cream and push it up for an edgy everyday style.

5. The Ultimate Lob
With a few slight modifications, a lob (long bob) will work for any hair texture. If you’ve got fine, straight strands, go for a dramatic blunt option, advises Garren. For wavy hair, air-dry it, add a deep side part, and spritz with a sea-salt spray for a perfectly messy, piece-y style. Bonus: If you’ve been wanting to try the wet look trend, Garren says a lob is the perfect length. Just comb through your hair with plenty of shine serum or cream for “the ultimate beach look”.

6. A Round-off

If you long ago burned any photos of your childhood haircut, this #tbt suggestion will bowl you over. Garren recommends a short, rounded-off bowl cut (gasp!), updated for 2017. This time around, the smooth uniform cut has a shaggier texture that rises above the ears and remains short at the neckline. The great thing about resurrecting this look is, like other short cuts, this ‘do requires no heat styling. And heat-free styling minimizes hair damage and keeps your lazy summer mornings hassle-free. The epitome of wash-and-go!
