If you’re like us, you already cannot wait for summer! You can already picture it: you’re out there running in the sun, swimming in a chlorinated pool, and maybe even taking a dip in the ocean. Basically living your best summer life, non-stop. But all those UV rays, chlorine, salt and — yes, sweat — can cause hair breakage. With summer fast approaching, get these summer hair care tips now to help you to stop the hair damage spiral before it starts!
Our Top Summer Hair Care Tips
1. Prevent Frizz with Hydration
Does humidity make your hair frizz? You’re certainly not alone. Frizz happens when water vapor from the air penetrates dry damaged hair, causing it to curl. So, keeping hair strong and hydrated is essential to preventing frizz.
Treat hair frequently with a moisturizing conditioner like Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Conditioner. Seal out humidity with natural hair oils in the summer, such as argan oil or coconut oil. These oils are humectants so they retain hair’s moisture while sealing out extra humidity.
You can also fight dry summer hair with a hot oil treatment. First, choose your favorite oil. We recommend avocado, neem, rosehip or coconut oil. Heat the oil on the stove until it’s warm, but not hot. Test a little of the warm oil on the back of your hand first, to be sure it’s not too hot.
When the oil is ready, lean over your bathtub and pour it onto your scalp. Then, massage the oil into your scalp and spread it from your hair’s roots to tips. Separate out any excess oil and then tuck your hair up into a towel or shower cap. Leave the oil on for at least one hour and then use a gentle shampoo like Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Shampoo to wash it out. The general rule of thumb is to do this once a week, but you can repeat it as often as you think your hair needs it.
2. Sun Protection for Hair
We’ve all faced the straw-like tresses that come with sun-stressed hair. Moisture from a good deep conditioning mask can help smooth hair strands and reduce frizz. But you should also take steps to protect your hair from sun damage in the first place.
Studies on UV damage and hair care show that UVB rays are responsible for hair protein loss (that is, the breakdown of keratin in hair strands). UVA rays, on the other hand, are responsible for color changes.
Colored and chemically treated hair has an even higher risk of sun damage. Blow dryers, curling irons, and flat-iron straighteners dry the hair creating split ends with a “frizzed” look. Adding additional damage from sun exposure will only make this worse.
Luckily, there are a few things you can do to protect your hair from the sun:
- Use hair products formulated with UV filters.
- Wear a sun hat.
- Make your own hair sunscreen by combining 3 teaspoons of sunscreen with 1 ½ cups of water in a spray bottle.
Definitely do not spray your hair with lemon or an alcohol-based hair product. Lemon and other acidic summer hair products will not only discolor hair, including that expensive dye job, but they also can dry out and damage hair cuticles.
3. Get Your Beauty Sleep
Friction between your hair and your cotton pillowcase is a real thing. So sleep on silk to help prevent that damaging friction. Unlike cotton, silk causes less damage and breakage in strands. And it also prevents bedhead! Replace your regular pillowcase with a silk pillowcase, or wear a silk hair cap at night.
4. Use Less Damaging Hair Ties
Lean in to the ’80s and ’90s nostalgia and help protect your hair from damage with this fun tip. Elastic ponytail holders can pull too tightly on hair, causing damage. Reach for a retro fabric hair tie, a bandanna or even a scrunchy to make a statement and protect your hair.
5. Cleanse Gently
Recently, the conventional hair wisdom has been that you should not shampoo every day. But daily shampooing is fine as long as you use a gentle shampoo that does not strip the natural oils from hair, like Viviscal Densifying Shampoo.
In fact, in the summer, the scalp produces excess sebum, making hair oily. So it’s important to wash hair and gently exfoliate the scalp regularly to keep it clean and healthy. After all, a clean scalp is the ideal environment for healthy hair growth!
6. Make Hair-Healthy Food Choices
A good diet or a hair supplement is the key to beautiful hair growth because you’ve got to nourish that healthy hair from within.*
Protein-rich foods like eggs and marine proteins (think fish and shellfish) promote thick, full hair growth. Good fats like omega-3s are also essential, as are B vitamins like biotin and niacin, and minerals like iron and zinc.
You can also take Viviscal hair growth† supplement, which is formulated with all these hair-healthy vitamin and minerals. Plus it has an exclusive complex, AminoMar™, derived from marine proteins. It’s the ideal way to feed your follicles what they need to promote existing healthy hair growth.*
